An analysis on chesive devices found in student's english argumentative essay at Artha Wacana Christian University Kupang
This research aimed to find out the types and dominant use of cohesive devices in students’ English argumentative essay writing. This study was designed as qualitative study. The subject of this research was taken from students’ argumentative essays at Artha Wacana Christian University Kupang. There were 10 essays in writing course. The instrument of this research used documentary analysis and the data were collected through the document of students’ argumentative writings analyzed using the theory of cohesion by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The analysis was concerned with grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction), and lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation). The results of this study show that the 10 argumentative essays of students produced the five types of cohesive devices. There were reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. Among those five types, conjunction most prominently with (44,9%), followed by the reference (37%), lexical cohesion (16%), while substitution (1,18%) and ellipsis (0,79%). Therefore, the researcher concluded that in students' argumentative essay the students still overused and misplaced of certain cohesive device namely conjunction, references and repetition.
