An Analysis on phonemes of loan words into Sabunese

ABSTRACT

This research entitled, “AN ANALYSIS ON PHONEMES OF LOAN WORDS INTO SABUNESE”. The problem of this writing is what are the phonemes of loan words in Sabu language. The aim of this research is to find out phonemes of loan words in Sabu language. The informants are Sabu people who live in Kupang and who always speak Sabu language in their daily communication among them. In this case the writer chooses two native speakers whose age 17-50 and the writer herself as a nativespeaker.The instruments of collecting data is questionnaires and it was conducted following these proses; first, the writer ask them some questions and ask them to write loan words; second, the writer list and classify the data based on phonemes ,third,the writer analysis the data, and the last the writer reported the result of the data analysis. The result of the research showed that Sabu language has place and manner of articulation such as billabial, alveolar, velar, glottal, plosive, lateral, and trill. There are some phonemes in the middle of the words has deletion like in pompa, tenda, and minggu. Phonemes m, n,and ng are deletion and become popa, teda,and migu. They deletion those phonemes because it makes them easy to produce. There are some phonemes in the final position of the words are deletion also like in m, r, n, ng, p, t, k, and l from words buram, putar, lawan, piring, lap, tiket, anak, and kabel become bura, puta,lawa,piri, la, tike, ana, and kabe. The writer suggesst that parents should teach their children Sabu language, the students or young generation to realize that Sabu language as the forefather language should be maintained, for the native speakers not only can speak but also can make differences and understand pronunce of the phonemes. While , for those who are not native speakers of Sabu language can understand the reason of phonemes deletion of loan words in Sabu language.For the goverment ask the society to maintain the local language by speak their language and do not loose it from their cultural ceremony.
