An Analysis of category shifts in Paulo Coelhos the winner stands alone novel into Indonesian Translation

ABSTRACT

The title of this writing is “An Analysis of Category Shifts in Paulo Coelho’s The Winner Stands Alone into Indonesian Translation”. There are two research problems used in this writing, 1). What are the types of category shifts used in The Winner Stands Alone’sIndonesian translation? 2. What is the dominant type of category shifts used in The Winner Stands Alone’sIndonesian translation? In order to get the data, the data taken from Paulo Coelho’s English novel The Winner Stands Alone novel and its Indonesian translation Sang PemenangBerdiriSendirian. This writing belongs to Qualitative research. The type of data used in this research is documentary. The instruments used in this writing were the writer herself, data sheets, and related references. The writer hopes this writing could give many valuable contributions to build up the understanding in learning English as second language especially in the learning process of Translation subjects. The result of the data analysis shows that all types of category shifts, namely structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift occurred in The Winner Stands Alone novel’s Indonesian translation. From the data, the writer found there were 293 cases of category shifts occurred. Structure shift with 135 data or 46,07% out of 293 total data, followed by unit shift with 96 data or 32,77% out of 293 total data, the third place was intra-system shift with 37 data or 12,63% out of 293 total data, and the fourth one was class shift with 25 data or 8,53% out of 293 total data. Therefore, the dominant type of category shifts occurred in the Indonesian transalation of The Winner Stands Alone novel is structure shift.
