An analysis on compound words in "The gospel of Mark" text using Kupang Malay

ABSTRACT
This research was conducted under the title: AN ANALYSIS ON COMPOUND WORDS IN “THE GOSPEL OF MARK” TEXT USING KUPANG MALAY. The research problem of this study is formulated in the following questions namely: What are the types of compound words in “The Gospel of Mark” text using Kupang Malay? And what are the positions of compound words in “The Gospel of Mark” text using Kupang Malay? The aims of this study are to find out the types and positions on compound words written in “The Gospel of Mark” text using Kupang Malay. The instrument for collecting the data is documentary. All the data gained are analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The result of this research shows that, there are three category types and two positions on compound word written in “The Gospel of Mark” text using Kupang Malay. First, Nominal compound that consist of Noun + Noun, Noun + Verb, Noun + Adjective are combined to produce new noun word. Example of Noun + Noun: Padi (N) + Gandum(N) = Wheat flour (N). Noun + Verb: Burung (N) + Pompa (V) = Dove (N). Noun + Adjective: Carita (N) + Bae (A) = Gospel (N). Second, Verbal compound that consist of Verb + Verb, Verb + Noun, Verb + Adjective are combined to produce new verb word. Example of Verb + Verb: Hapus (V) + Buang (V) = Remission (V). Verb + Noun: Datang (V) + Bulan (N) = Menstruate (V). Verb + Adjective: Bekin (V) + Bae (A) = Cure (V). Third is Adjective compound that consist of Adjective + Adjective, Noun + Adjective, Adjective + Noun, Noun + Noun are combined to produce new adjective word. Example of Adjective + Adjective: Puti (A) + Mangkilat (A) = Shining (A). Noun + Adjective: Tangan (N) + Kosong (A) = Without taking anything (A). Adjective + Noun: Sanang (A) + Hati (N) = Glad (A). Noun + Noun: Hati (N) + Susa (N) = Sorrowful (A). Position of compound word there are: First, Equal compound that consist of Noun + Noun, Verb + Verb, Adjective + Adjective. Example of Noun + Noun: Kapala (N) + Batu (N) = Stubborn. Verb + Verb: Do’i (V) + Buang (V) = Pluck out. Adjective + Adjective: Puti (A) + Mangkilat (A) = Shining. Second is Unequal compound that consist of Noun + Adjective, Verb + Noun, Adjective + Noun. Example of Noun + Adjective: Kayu (N) + Kudung (A) = Club. Verb + Noun: Tikam (V) + Lutut (N) = Kneel. Adjective + Noun: Iri (A) + Hati (N) = Jealous.
