An analysis of english teachers characteristics at SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in Academic Year 2015/2016

ABSTRACT
This study is entitled “An Analysis on English Teachers’ Characteristics at SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in Academic Year 2015/2016”. This study is motivated by two research questions, 1)What are the English teachers’ characteristics at SMP Negeri 2 Kupang?, 2) What are the implication of these characteristics towards students enthusiasm to learn in English learning and teaching classroom?. Thus the aimed of this study is to 1) Find out the English teachers’ characteristics, 2) Find out the implication of these characteristics towards students enthusiasm to learn English at SMP Negeri 2 Kupang. In conducting this research the writer used descriptive qualitative method by taking data from three teachers and 30 second grade students of that school. The instruments used for collecting data are observation and questionnaires. The results show that teachers at SMP Negeri 2 Kupang have personal and profesional characteristics identified as effective teachers. Those characteristics are prepared teacher, positive teacher, teacher who hold high expectation, creative teacher, fair teacher, teacher who display a personal touch, teacher who cultivate a sense of belonging, compassionate teacher, teacher who have a sense of humor, teacher who respect students, forgiving teacher and teacher who admit mistakes. So, out of twelve characteristics as mentioned by Walker (2008), this study forward ten characteristics, without the two creative teacher and teacher who have a sense humor in learning and teaching process. Further the data also indicates that these characteristics have several implication towards students learning enthusiasm such as: being enthusiastic in learning, understanding the material, feeling relax, feeling happy, improving self confidence, raising motivation, feeling mising important, being challenged, being satisfied, enthusiasm when using games, positive atmosphere, encouraged, active, initiative and review the materials.
