An analysis on conflict in "A rose for emily" a short story by William Faulkner (1897-1962)
ABSTRACT
The title of this study is AN ANALYSIS ON CONFLICT IN “A ROSE FOR EMILY†A SHORT STORY BY WILLIAM FAULKNER. The research problem of the study are 1). What are the conflict in the short story“ A Rose for Emily†?, and 2). What kinds of conflict in the short story ?. The aims of study are 1). To know how conflicts happen the in William Faulkner “A Rose for Emilyâ€ÂÂ. and 2). To find out kinds of conflict in short story. The method that used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from conversation, sentences, paragraph of the short story A rose for Emily. The theory of conflict, that is used by the writer is taken from Wellek and Warren (1986;285). Based on the data analysis the writer found out that: External conflict which consist of two, Social conflict happens when an individual interacts with other people. For example: Emily is in conflict with Mayor and Aldermen, they to say Emily not have taxes in Jefferson. Physical conflict is an individual interaction has with nature ( Hungry, cold, fire, rain). For example: When Emily’s father died, it got about that the house was all that was left to her ; and in away, people were glad. And Internal conflict or Psychological conflict is a character struggling against himself. For example: After her father’s death her sweetheart went away. The whole conflicts are grouped into social, physical, and psychological conflict. This writing really contributes some benefits to public in general especially for those with passion in literary works and provider analytical description of conflict encountered in “A Rose for Emily†short story. The findings of writing are still open to be proved by the other research
