The title of this writing is “A Descriptive Study on Using Portfolio Assessment in Teaching English At SMK Negeri 1 Kalabahi in School Year 2016/2017.” This research was conducted to answer the question “What are the types of portfolio assessment in teaching English at SMK Negeri 1 Kalabahi? with the aim of study of this research is to find out how teacher uses the types of portfolio assessment in teaching English at SMK Negeri 1 Kalabahi. The writer analyses the data using descriptive qualitative method and the subject of this research is a teacher who teaches English to students at SMK Negeri 1 Kalabahi. This research aims to know the development of student’s ability, teacher uses the types of portfolio assessment to measure their learning achievement that relies an individual difference. The methods used in this study is interview. The writer interviewed the only one English teacher by giving some questions and analyzed the answer given by the English teacher. The result of this study is that the teacher has wide knowledge about the uses three types of portfolio assessment there are working portfolio, showcase portfolio and personal portfolio. Because of using three types of portfolio assessment may know their knowledge, progress and outcome in the learning process and improve the student’s knowledge and also the teacher professionalism as an English teacher. The teacher chooses learning process as the main priority in the uses types of portfolio assessment, because the teacher belives that if a student does something better in learning process And also three types of portfolio assessment helps students to be more active and to do self- assessment so they may know their strength and weakness in certain skills. So the writer concludes that it is a good reason for the teacher to choose and uses types of portfolio assessment as her media to know and measure the students’ knowledge about English subject, even other subjects.
