Strategies in teaching reading comprehension applied by lecturers of english study program at Artha Wacana Christian University in Academic Year 2016/2017
This research is conducted under the title “Strategies in Teaching Reading Comprehension Applied by Lecturers of English Study Program at Artha Wacana Christian University in Academic Year 2016/2017“. The problems of this study are, the first what are the strategies in teaching Reading Comprehension Applied by Lecturers of English Study Program at Artha Wacana Christian University in academic year 2016/2017? And the second, what are the dominate strategies that they used? This study is supported by theory of Vicky Zygouris-Coe (2009), which study about lecturer strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The aim of this research is to find out the strategies in teaching reading comprehension by Lecturers of English Study Program at Artha Wacana Christian University and the dominate strategies that they used. In this research, the writer used descriptive method which is regarded as an effective way of attempting to answer the problem of this thesis. The research took six English lecturers as population and just took three lecturers as sample by using random sampling. The instrument used is questionnaire. For this case, the writer shared the questionnaire to the lecturers. After gathering data, it was found out the Lecturers of English Study Program at Artha Wacana Christian University used all of the strategies in teaching reading comprehension, they are activating prior knowledge, cooperative learning, using graphic organizers, visualizing, asking and generating questions, recognizing text structure, summarizing and monitoring comprehension. Further, the study show that the dominant strategies used are strategy five and strategy one. The English lecturers always apply these strategies every meeting.
