A Descriptive study on language teaching styles and strategies of Mrs. Laura's and Mr. Bill's lesson video
This study entitled “A Descriptive Study on Language Teaching Styles and Strategies of Mrs. Laura’s and Mr. Bill’s Lesson Videoâ€ÂÂ. The problem of this study is to answer 2 research questions; 1) what are the types of teaching styles and strategies found in Mrs. Laura’s and Mr. Bill’s lesson video? 2) how are these teaching styles and strategies suit to the teaching materials and teaching goals? The aim of this research therefore is to find out the types of teaching styles and strategies are used by Mrs. Laura and Mr. Bill in the videos and to explain how these teaching styles and strategies suit to the teaching materials and teaching goals. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The data resource used for this study is two lesson videos which are taken from DVD to accompany the new edition of “The Practice of English Language Teaching†by Jeremy Harmer-one of the best-selling books on Teaching English as a Foreign Language methodology published by Pearson Longman (2007). The researcher chose two lesson videos as the sampling. After gathering the result, the researcher concludes that there are three types of teaching style employed by Mrs. Laura namely expert, formal authority, and facilitator while four types of teaching style employed by Mr. Bill namely expert, formal authority, personal model, and facilitator. There are five types of teaching strategy employed by Mrs. Laura, namely brainstorming, case-based small group discussion, independent study, role play, and self-awareness exercise/test and five types employed by Mr. Bill namely brainstorming, case-based small group discussion, demonstration, lecturer/presentation, and self-awareness exercise/test. In their lesson showed that teaching styles and strategies that they use suit to the teaching materials and teaching goals. They use these styles and strategies to make the students understand the materials and enjoy the class
