An Analysis on Politeness Strategies used by Lecturess in Speaking Class of Third Semester at English Study Program of Artha Wacana Christian University in Academic year 2016/2017
ABSTRACT
The present study centered on Politeness Strategies Used by Lecturers in Speaking Class of Third Semester at English Study Program of Artha Wacana Christian University in Academic Year 2016/2017. It was intended to investigate the type politeness strategies performed by the lecturers in classroom. It also aimed in exploring the factors which influence the use of politeness strategies by the lecturers. The main data were the utterance delivered by the lecturers in teaching and learning situation which were recorded, transcribed, then analyzed using Brown and Levinson theory of politeness strategies (1987). The other data sources were obtained from observation and interview with the lecturers. The finding revealed that two lecturers applied four of five strategies which were bald on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. But one lecturer only applied three of five strategies which were bald on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, and negative politeness strategy. However the all lecturers did not apply all of the sub-strategies of each strategy. It was also discovered that the factors which influence the lecturers in choosing politeness strategies involving relative power, social distance, and ranking of imposition.
