An Analysis on Teachers Elicitation technique in Teaching English to Elevanth grade Students at SMK Negeri 1 Kupang in Academic year 2016/2017
ABSTRACT
The title of this study is “An analysis of teachers’ elicitation technique in teaching English to eleventh grade students at SMK N 1 Kupangâ€ÂÂ. There are three research problems of this study: 1) What are the types of teachers’ elicitation technique used in teaching English at eleventh grade students at SMK N 1 KUPANG?, 2) What are the reasons of elicitation technique used in teaching english to eleventh grade students at SMK N 1 Kupang? 3) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using elicitation technique in teaching English ? The present study applied qulitative method. The subjects of this study were two teachers who teach English at eleventh grade students. Instruments used for collecting the data were observation and interview. After analyzing the data for each research problem, the writer found out that the teachers used four types of elicitation techniques which were asking questions (69,5%), asking questions combined with using pictures (9,3%), asking questions combined with using text or dialogues (16,4%), and asking question combined with using nonverbal language (4,6%). By using elicitation technique the teachers can motivate the students to be more active in the classroom and more focus on the topic that given. The advantages of this technique were to help in maximized the students talking time and simultaneously to minimize teacher talking time and create motivation among students, meanwhile the disadvantages of this technique were this technique may be waste time and encourage only better students.
