An Analysis on Teachers Correction techniques used in teaching speaking to the third Semester Students of english study program of Artha Wacana Christian University in Academic Year 2016/2017
ABSTRACT
The title of this study is “An Analysis on Teacher’s Correction Techniques Used in Teaching Speaking to The Third Semester Students of English Study Program of Artha Wacana Christian University in Academic Year 2016/ 2017â€ÂÂ. The aims of this study are to find out the types of correction techniques used by the speaking teacher of third semester students in English study program of Artha Wacana Christian University and the students’ responses towards correction given by the teacher which are explained descriptively by using descriptive qualitative method. Through the observation and questionnaire given to the 2 lecturers and 44 students in two speaking classes, the result shows that the lecturers used some varieties of corrections techniques in correcting students’ mistakes which were using symbols, reformulation, drilling, correction table, using rules and mistake sentences, make notes and conclusion, or peer and self correction. The students were also giving different responses. It shown by the presentation of their responses to the questionnaire given, 61% respondents strongly agree and 39% respondents agree to be directly corrected when they made mistakes. In the others side, 39% respondents strongly agree and 61% respondents agree to be immediately corrected when they made mistakes. Meanwhile, the negative responses also appeared from the students in which 70% of the respondents sometimes felt down if the lecturer corrected their mistakes, this feeling was derived from the perception of their colleagues would make fun if they were corrected. Finally, It is expected for the speaking lecturers to use varieties of correction techniques in teachhing process to avoid the students’ feeling of being judgement; and for the students to pay attention to the mistakes and correction given by the lecturer so the same mistakes can be avoid and then their speaking skills will be developed.
