Coherence Breaks in Thesis BackGround Written by,english Study Program of Artha Wacana Christian University in Academic Year 2014/2015
ABSTRACT
This research is entitled COHERENCE BREAKS IN THESIS BACKGROUND WRITTEN BY ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS OF ARTHA WACANA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015. This research is aimed to investigate types of coherence break found in the background of thesis writing of students of Artha Wacana Christian University in academic year 2014/2015 and the frequency of appearance of the types of coherence break. The data are collected in form of thesis background of the students of Artha Wacana Christian University in academic year 2014/2015. Since this research is included into qualitative, the method of collecting and analysis of data are descriptive qualitative and a simple statistical calculation with percentage formula. The result of this research indicated that there are five types of coherence break found in thesis background writing. They are Uncertain Inference Ties (UIT), Misleading Sentence Connection (MSC) which found on sentence level and Misleading Paragraph Division (MPD), Unjustified Change or Drift of Topic (UCT), and Unspecific Topic (UT) are found in paragraph and text level. The coherence breaks found in sentence level involved conjunction, noun and topic. In paragraph level, there are four causing aspects of coherence breaks; subject, object, conjunction, and topic which affect the occurrence of other coherence breaks in paragraphs. The frequency of appearance of coherence breaks was found as Uncertain Inference Ties (UIT) appeared in 60% of data, Misleading Sentence Connection (MSC), Misleading Paragraph Division (MPD), Unjustified Change or Drift of Topic (UCT), and Unspecific Topic (UT) which appeared in all the data or 100%.
