Analysis of Students motivation in learning english of SMP Negeri 5 Kota Kupang at the First grade in School Year 2016/2017
ABSTRACT
This study entitled “An Analysis Of Students’ Motivation In Learning English Of SMP Negeri 5 Kota Kupang At The First Grade In School Year 2016/2017â€ÂÂ. It was conducted to find out the types of motivation of the first grade language program students in learning English and the factors that affect of motivation in learning English. There are 31 students of the first grade language program that are involved by the writer in conducted this study. The writer used descriptive qualitative method in this study. Close questionnaires is used as instrument to conduct this research. Based on the findings the writer found two types of motivation. The first type is intrinsic motivation. Students’ intrinsic motivation is more visible than students’ extrinsic motivation in learning English. It shows in the highest percentage of students’ intrinsic motivation is (88, 14 %) with students’ hope that someday be capable of effective communication in the language and the lowest percentage of students’ intrinsic motivation is (68, 78 %) with students’ hope that someday the students can achieved maximum proficiency by learning English. The second type is extrinsic motivation. The highest percentage of students’ extrinsic motivation is (83, 63 %) which students believe that mainly focus on using English for class assignment and the exam, in this case language program class will be useful in students life and they will get a good job in the future by learning English well and the lowest percentage of students’ extrinsic motivation is (52, 73 %) which the students deals with simply quote the textbooks and do not really communicate by themselves when speaking or writing in language class program. And the highest percentage of factors that affects of students’ motivation in learning English is (87, 45 %) which students believe that better understanding supported them by learning environment and the lowest percentage of the factors is (52, 36 %) which students cannot believe good English be a leader This study looked into the English language learning motivation level of junior high school students and the writer found that the students at the first grade language program had both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to learn English so the teachers are supposed to be a motivator to motivate the students to never lack of motivation to learning English.
