An Analysis on Whole-part Relations of Metonymy
ABSTRACT
The research is entitled “An Analysis On Whole-Part Relations Of Metonymy In Kupang Malayâ€ÂÂ. The questions to answer this study are: 1) what are whole-part relations of metonymy used by Kupang people in Kupang Malay? 2) What are kinds of whole-part relations of metonymy found in Kupang Malay? The aims of this study are: 1) to find out whole-part relations of metonymy in Kupang Malay, 2) to classify kinds of whole-part relations of metonymy in Kupang Malay. The informants of this research were Kupang people as the native speakers of Kupang Malay who live in Kupang. The writer particularly has chosen 5 informants of native speakers. The instrument used to collect the data was the interview. The method used was the descriptive qualitative method. The result of data analysis showed that Kupang people use the whole-part relations of metonymy in Kupang malay in their daily spoken and the writer found 6 main types of whole-part relations of metonymy in 82 sentences or phrases of Kupang Malay, then the writer classified them into their own types. So, 15 types of thing and part metonymy in Kupang Malay sentences which were divided into its sub-types that was 8 types represented whole thing for a part of the thing and 7 types represented a part of the thing for the whole thing, 5 types of constitution metonymy in Kupang Malay that referred to its sub-type that was 5 types too for material constituting an object for the object, 29 types of event metonymy in Kupang Malay which were divided into its sub- types namely 9 types referred to whole event for the sub-event, 7 types represented sub- event for the whole event, 6 types represented actual for potential and 7 types represented potential for actual, 13 types of category and member metonymy in Kupang Malay were divided into its sub-types where in category for a member of the category contained 8 types and 5 types represented a member of the category for the category, 12 types of category and member metonymy in Kupang Malay which were divided into its sub-types namely 5 types referred to category for defining property and 7 types were in defining property for the category, 8 types of reduction metonymy which are divided into its sub-type namely a part of a form for the whole form that has 8 types too and the writer also found that in whole-part relations of metonymy in Kupang Malay can be found in form of phrases and words
