An Analysis on serial verb Construction in Ambon Malay

ABSTRACT
The title of this writing is AN ANALYSIS ON SERIAL VERB CONSTRUCTION IN AMBON MALAY. The aim of this research is to find out the types of serial verb construction in Ambon Malay. In this research, the writer chooses ten native speakers as the research informants. All the informants are the native speaker and lived in Southwestern Moluccas. The instrument for collecting the data is interview. The method that used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. In analyzing the data, the researcher found that Ambon people used serial verb construction in their daily conversation. The result of data analysis showed that there are seven types of serial verb construction in Ambon Malay. Those types which found in this research are as follows: Direction-Locative SVCs (Beta bajalang cari sayur la jual di pasar “I look for vegetable to sell in the market”), Benefactive-Dative SVCs (Om Angky pi ambel kalapa kasi tanta Anje “Uncle Angky take the coconut for aunt Anje”), Causative SVCs (Dia pukul kasi manangis Maria “He beats Maria”), Purpose SVCs (Mama jalang pi pasar beli ikang deng sayur “Mother goes to market to buy fish and vegetable”), Motion SVCs (Ana itu lari pi di rum asana “The boy runs to that house”), Instrumental SVCs (Ana pi pukul Mey pake gayung “Ana beats Mey with scoop”), Iterative SVCs (Tiap hari beta pigi datang sekolah deng jalang kaki “Every day I round trip to the school on foot”).
