Context of Situation in Tam Totis of Uab Meto in Nunkolo South Timor Regency

ABSTRACT
The title of the research is “Context of Situation in Tam Totis of Uab Meto in Nunkolo South Timor Regency”. Research problem is what are context of situation (Field, Tenor, Mode) in Tam Totis?. The aim of the research is to find out and describe the context of situation for marriage proposal called Tam Totis. Tam Totis is a traditional marriage proposal used by people in Nunkolo village. A descriptive qualitative method was applied for this purpose. In getting the data, an observation was done on 20th of November 2016. While done the observation, the researcher recorded the process of asking for marriage. The context of situation such as field, tenor, and mode furthermore, into process of Tam Totis. The field of the text is a process of asking for marriage which more emphasize in the family meeting. There were two main speakers and other participants from the extended family of those two people who wanted to get marriage were included in the tenor of text; while the mode was used spoken language, in form of dialogue; they used Uab Meto language in formal situation and used the language style to persuade the girl’s family. The opening of a text is the speaker of the bridegroom said that his aim to come to the girl’s house received men proposed, girl stood up and men wore a ring to her ring finger, and then the girl presented the man a traditional shawl. The closure start when they get the decision and two speakers invited the audience to having dinner together. By this writing it is hoped that the English Study Program Students should understand about context of situation in every cultural as according to their culture.
